The Brave Little African Girl

Thabitha Mathabatha

A little African girl named Fofo used to play a lot in the veld with her brothers. When they played, they went into secluded areas, areas where water seeped from the ground on its own. Places where there were natural springs so green with algae, you would swear there was a crocodile hiding in there. The natural spring was so still, shaken only by the bubbles of tadpoles every now and then.
The little African girl was always fascinated by the spring’s stillness, and she wanted to discover what could be hiding in it. That day, Fofo wanted to sneak out without her brothers, go alone to the foot of the mountain, and skinny-dip in the natural pool. One day she decides to venture off by herself to swim in the natural pool at the foot of the mountain. As Fofo enjoys the refreshing spring water, she doesn’t realize she’s in danger. And then, on the bank, she hears the cry of an animal. She saves a baby lion being born, names him Angel, and carries the cub home. However, will she give up the animal so it can be returned to the wild?
